What Animals and Birds Can You Expect to See in the Galapagos?
- Blue-footed boobies (the best photo opportunities)
- Giant tortoises
- Millions of black marine iguanas
- Adorable baby sea lions
- Penguins
- Flightless, sea-diving cormorants
- And much more
Why Is a Cruise Absolutely the Best Way to See the Galapagos?
You could fly to Baltra, take a ferry to Santa Cruz Island, stay at a hotel, and take boat day trips to the different islands each day. But those islands are hours away by boat — and that’s the only way to get there. Unless you want to spend 6 hours a day in transit, you’re much better off sitting right off the island on your comfortable cruise ship.

When Is the Best Time to Cruise to the Galapagos?
That depends on whether you prefer mildly hot or very hot weather. The rainy season runs December through May — that’s also the hot season. Our guides noted that March is historically the hottest month, and since you do a lot of walking and standing around, temperatures of 90°F and humid can be brutal.
The “cool” season means temperatures of 70–80°F — still very comfortable. The water is warmer during the warm season, making snorkeling more pleasant, though wet suits are provided so most people are fine year-round.

The internet will often say December through May is the best time to visit — but we disagree, and so do the Galapagos guides themselves. August through November is best.
Which Is Better — a 7-Day or 10-Day Galapagos Cruise?
You really do see enough in 7 days. After 3–4 hours on any given island, the topography and animals start to feel repetitive. We’d suggest spending extra days on a land tour of Machu Picchu or Quito instead.
Which Galapagos Itinerary Is Better — the Inner or Outer Loop?
The most interesting islands are Española and Santa Cruz, and both the inner and outer loops visit those. So it truly doesn’t matter which you choose.

Cruise Lines and Ships That Sail to the Galapagos
- Celebrity — Flora, Xpedition, and Xploration
- Lindblad Special Expeditions — National Geographic Islander and National Geographic Endeavor II
- Silversea — Silver Galapagos and Silver Origin
- Avalon Waterways — Treasure of Galapagos

Which Cruise Line Offers the Most Affordable Galapagos Cruise?
One of the smaller Celebrity ships — the Xpedition or the Xploration — will be the most affordable option.
Which Cruise Line Offers the Most Luxurious Galapagos Experience?
Either the Celebrity Flora or the Silversea Silver Galapagos or Silver Origin. These ships offer a truly 5-star experience. When you return from a shore excursion, someone is standing at a refreshment table offering hot beverages in the morning and wine in the afternoon. There may even be a chocolate fountain. Seriously.
