Looking for a cruise departing from Venice?
Here are all the ports which are close to Venice, and call themselves Venice departures!
If your cruise departs from ‘Venice’, but cruise ships aren’t allowed in Venice anymore, where do you go to get on and off the ship?
And how will you get to spend any time in Venice?
Below are all the ports NEAR Venice that your cruise may depart from. You will have to come in a day or two early, or stay late, and get yourself to Venice, in order to spend time in Venice.
The closest port to Venice is Marghera – only 10 minutes away. Then Malfacone, then Trieste, then Ancona and Revenna. (Fusina is super close, but only luxury ships depart from there.)
Malfacone and Trieste are about 90 minutes to 2 hours east of Venice. There are affordable buses, rideshares and shuttles between these ports and Venice.
Trieste is itself a cute town, but Malfacone is just a shipping port.
NOTE: The departure port of Revenna is about 2 hours south of Venice, but the cruise lines are calling it Venice! It’s about 3 hours by bun or train to Venice, 2 and 1/2 by rideshare.
See Rome to Rio for good all your transportation options to and from these ports.
NOTE ALSO: The port of Marghera is just over the bridge from the island of Venice. It’s about as close as a big cruise ship can get these days, so this is a GOOD departure port if you want to see Venice!
Right now, only a few Costa cruises depart from here. Hopefully more soon.
There’s a port called Fusina that is right across the water from the island of Venice. So it’s as close as Marghera. This port is only used by the LUXURY, smaller cruise ships.
Did you know: Cruises to Rome actually dock in Civitavecchia, about 1 and ½ hours out of Rome, so you have to bus, taxi or train yourself to Rome. And it works.
In 2012 Lonely Planet listed the city of Trieste as the world’s most underrated travel destination.
Bari and Brindisi are located in the south of Italy, so they are much farther than Venice.
Ancona is located on the Eastern side of the Italian boot, only about 2 hours further south than Venice.
(So you can drive there from Stuttgart in about 9 hours and 15 minutes.)
Eastern Mediterranean ports include:
Greece – Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Katakolon, Corfu, Iraklion and Chania (Crete), Rhodes, Igoumenitsa, Argostolion
Italy: Venice, Trieste, Bari, Brindisi, Ancona, Ravenna, Geggio Calabria, Corigliano Calabro
Croatia: Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar
Montenegro: Kotor
Albania: Sarande
Slovenia: Kopor
