Looking for a Cruise Departing From Venice?
Here are all the ports near Venice that cruise lines call "Venice departures"
If your cruise departs from "Venice" but cruise ships aren't allowed in Venice anymore, where do you go to get on and off the boat? Below are all the ports near Venice that your cruise may depart from. You will have to come in a day or two early, or stay late, to spend time in Venice itself.
The closest port to Venice is Marghera — only 10 minutes away. Then Monfalcone, then Trieste, then Ancona and Ravenna. (Fusina is super close, but only luxury ships depart from there.)
Monfalcone and Trieste are about 90 minutes to 2 hours east of Venice. There are affordable bus, rideshare, and shuttle services between these ports and Venice. Trieste is a charming city in its own right — Lonely Planet named it the world's most underrated travel destination. Monfalcone is primarily a shipping port.
The port of Ravenna is about 2 hours south of Venice, but cruise lines are calling it Venice. It's about 3 hours by bus or train to Venice, or 2.5 hours by rideshare. See Rome2Rio for all your transportation options to and from these ports.
The port of Marghera is just over the bridge from the island of Venice — about as close as a big cruise ship can get these days. Currently only a few Costa cruises depart from here, but it's an excellent option if you want easy access to Venice.
There's also a port called Fusina right across the water from the island of Venice — equally close to Marghera. This port is used only by smaller luxury cruise ships.
Did you know: Cruises to Rome actually dock in Civitavecchia, about 1.5 hours outside Rome, so you bus, taxi, or train yourself into the city. It works well.
Bari and Brindisi are located in the south of Italy, so they are much farther from most bases in Germany than Venice.
Ancona is on the eastern side of the Italian peninsula, only about 2 hours further south than Venice — about 9 hours 15 minutes by car from Stuttgart.
Eastern Mediterranean Ports Include:
Greece: Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Katakolon, Corfu, Heraklion and Chania (Crete), Rhodes, Igoumenitsa, Argostoli
Italy: Venice, Trieste, Bari, Brindisi, Ancona, Ravenna, Reggio Calabria, Corigliano Calabro
Croatia: Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar
Montenegro: Kotor
Albania: Sarandë
Slovenia: Koper
